Halflings are a generally peaceful and easygoing people. They’re smaller than humans, whom they resemble. But, they’ve been blessed with longer lifespans than humans. They are often found looking for joy and contentment in life. They were once a nomadic people, but several generations ago, they were granted a new home by Yondalla, their chief deity. Halflings enjoy eating, smoking, and relaxing. However, some halflings have a taste for adventure and mischief.
Appearance:
Halflings resemble humans, but on a smaller scale. They are sometimes mistaken as young humans when they journey abroad. Halfling males who interact with humans often grow their facial hair out in a way to show that they are not children.
Halflings skin color ranges from pale, to a ruddy tan. Halflings’ skin color does not range as dark as humans. They often sport freckles on their skin, but not all do. Hair color ranges as widely as humans. Halflings often have curly or wavy hair. Adult halflings grow a thick padding of hair on the tops of their feet. Male halflings grow facial hair, but not all keep it.
Halfling eyes resemble human eyes. Although hafling eye color has a wider range than humans do, with purple and yellow eyes being as common as others.
History:
The old halfling homeland was destroyed a long time ago, leaving its people displaced and wandering. They have no record or recollection of what the destruction was or what caused it. They seemed doomed to wander forever, or settle in the human controlled lands of Nim’thar. Several generations ago the goddess Yondalla intervened and granted them a new home, and island off the coast of Nim’thar. Its lands are quite fertile and the halflings living there are doing quite well for themselves.
Religion:
Halflings have three racial deities. Those who do not worship these tend to worship gods relating to home or agriculture. Halflings also honor their ancestors, often having family shrines which they pray to. They believe that their ancestors can influence the living world. Keeping one’s ancestors happy is important.
Yondalla is the primary halfling deity. Most halflings also hold Ninmah, the goddess of joy, close to their hearts. Brandobaris is a favorite character of stories, and he’s referenced often, but not many worship him as a main deity. Halfling adventurers are the most likely to praise him and seek his boon.
Names:
Halflings are very often named after an ancestor whom they resemble or the family is trying to gain favor with. Halflings then have a family name. Halfling families can be quite large, so halflings often reference a geographical feature to identify where they are from. For example, Milo Brandywine East-oak, or Narana Nindillo Riverside.
